On 1 May, Finland celebrates ‘Vappu’, the country’s biggest spring festival, Labour Day and a lively student festival. There are street parties everywhere and people wear white student caps and colourful overalls. The Escape Games are actually closed on this day. Many thanks at this point to Escape Porvoo for letting us play despite the public holiday and for the extremely friendly hosting. We felt we were in good hands.
Porvoo is located 45 minutes northeast of Helsinki. The journey is worth it! Escape Porvoo offers three unusual scenarios, which can be played in Finnish, Swedish or English. I liked all of them. In „On Air“ you are a part of a production team of a TV show and in „The Dystopian Restaurant“ (Terpeca nominee in 2022) you‘re stepping into a Chateau Le Bauf restaurant.
My favourite, however, was Bermuda – by far the most elaborate room in terms of scenery and effects, where everything revolves around the mysterious riddle of a famous lighthouse.
Difficult, often multi-stage puzzles with a largely parallel structure. In the final part, it wasn’t always one hundred per cent clear to us what to do, and we asked for a tip or two in order to finish in time.
The beautiful, atmospheric setting, some great effects as well as clever mechanics and transitions make this game an extraordinary experience and my personal number 2 in Finland.
