When I looked at our China gamelist before our trip, Cindy Died 9 Times was one of the most interesting games based on the name alone. And when we went to play the game, I didnt’t have a clue, what kind of game it would be, but this time the name did not disappointed me. Cindy was perhaps the most original game of the entire trip.

What makes Cindy so unique is the game mechanic. The game is played in one room and your mission is to help a character named Cindy survive her day alive. So, as the name suggests, Cindy has 9 lives in the game and that’s how many chances you have to complete the game. The game has three different endings, good, bad and a secret ending (which has only been achieved by a few teams in the entire history of the game). In addition, the game has five different killers, which also affect the gameplay, meaning that there is some replayability in the game through that. Each killer brings its own little extra spice to the game.

Even though the game is played in one room only, it is still interesting. The players’ actions have effect on the gameplay and you have to use different methods during the game. Game used technology well and interesting ways and there are some nice effects. Actors did a good job and made me laugh at several points during the game.

Unusually in China, the GM/owner spoke English to us during introduction and recap. In addition, some of the game’s texts were translated into English, which was nice too. Hopefully the game will be translated into English as a whole at some point, because it would be worth it. It would make the game experience smoother to english players.

The game’s theme song stayed in my head many days after playing and it followed us pretty much everywhere we went in rest of our China trip. We had luckily change download it to ourself so I have change to travel back to Cindy, while listening the song.

The game is not the most visually stunning of Chinese games, but it is maybe the most original and has a lot of soul. This shows once again that a good game doesn’t need to use all the gimmicks and moving surfaces, but a good and original concept is sometimes enough. And it worked in Cindy, the concept was fantastic! I’m looking forward to 6 mins’ future projects.
