Introduction
Doors of Divergence had already built a strong reputation within the community before their closure in New York City. Their recognition at the TERPECA Awards only reinforced that Madness 1917 reached #37 in 2023, while Heresy 1897 also made it into the finalists, placing #119. Even with those expectations, we didn’t anticipate just how much this experience would stand out. And yet, it completely did.
Story & Emotion
What makes this experience so unique is how your choices carry over. The story doesn’t reset between games. Instead, it evolves. Decisions, interactions, and actions in Heresy 1897 directly influence what happens later in Madness 1917 in ways you don’t immediately realize.
That realization hit us afterward: things could have played out very differently. And that’s exactly what makes this so special. It creates a strong sense of curiosity and replayability—we instantly wanted to go back and explore alternative paths.
The actors play a huge role here. Their performances are outstanding and far beyond what you’d expect from a typical game master. Every interaction feels intentional, natural, and deeply immersive. It’s interactive storytelling at a level we’ve rarely experienced before. Combined with roleplay elements, it truly feels like a hybrid between an escape room and immersive theatre.
Set & Atmosphere
The set design is about purpose and immersion. The environment feels carefully constructed to support the narrative and the interactions within it. From what we experienced, there is a strong emphasis on detailed, grounded spaces that feel believable rather than theatrical.
What stood out to us was how the atmosphere is shaped through sound, light and subtle environmental cues. It creates this constant feeling that something is happening—sometimes just out of sight—which adds to the overall immersion.
A small note: due to the open ceiling structure, you may occasionally hear activity from other areas. It’s a minor detail, but something to be aware of—you’ll want to stay focused on your own storyline to remain fully immersed.
Puzzles & Teamwork
The puzzles complement the experience beautifully. They are engaging, well-designed, and integrated into the narrative.
What we especially loved is how the focus evolves between the two chapters. Heresy 1897 leans a bit more into puzzle-solving, offering a variety of challenges that ease you into the world while still feeling meaningful within the story.
Then, in Madness 1917 teamwork becomes much more central. Communication, coordination, and shared decision-making take the spotlight, making the experience feel more collaborative.
This creates a layered experience where both puzzling and teamwork feel purposeful, evolving alongside the story.
Final Thoughts
Doors of Divergence delivers something so special. The combination of outstanding performances, meaningful interaction, and a branching narrative system creates an experience that goes far beyond a traditional escape room.
Especially for me, it became the top experiences of the trip and one of the few rooms where replayability isn’t just a bonus, but a core part of the design.
We left not only impressed, but genuinely curious about everything we didn’t see.
If you enjoy immersive storytelling, strong performances, and experiences where your choices truly matter—this is where you need to go.
