After completing every Umeplay theme, I can confidently say that Reviver is, in my opinion, both the most challenging and the most fun “tape” Umeplay has to offer. In terms of horror, I’d say it’s only mildly scary, so even people who normally can’t handle horror very well should be totally fine giving it a try.
Throughout the entire experience, we’re accompanied by a friendly NPC—the Blogger—who acts as our guide. The story is that we came across a recruitment post online looking for people to join this adventure. You can also think of yourselves as fans of the Blogger who signed up to participate in one of his interactive fan adventures.
We follow the Blogger down to Level -5 and gradually uncover what happened in this hospital in the past. Eventually, we try to escape, only for the elevator doors to open and reveal that somehow… we’re back on Level -5 again.
As always with Umeplay, the music is incredibly immersive, and the acting is so good that it genuinely feels like you’ve stepped into a horror movie. The Blogger might actually be more scared than the players—during some of the intense moments, he’ll literally scream along with you. The plot twist is also really shocking, and the way the DV footage loops back around becomes increasingly unsettling the more you think about it.
The biggest highlight of Reviver, though, is without a doubt the creature that stalks the later half of the experience. Played by a specialty performer with an absolutely massive, towering presence, its sheer physicality is INSANE. Being chased by it again and again through the hallways, plus the extremely close encounters in the locker room, creates so much pressure. It gets so close that you can literally feel it breathing on your face. After its first appearance, the pacing of the entire game immediately speeds up. Both the Blogger and the players become visibly more nervous and on edge, and from that point on, the horror atmosphere is turned all the way up.
Even before the creature appears, the buildup does a great job creating tension. We see the creature’s experiment report and Miya’s death certificate, while scares like a gate suddenly flying open or a bell unexpectedly ringing keep everyone nervous before the NPCs have even properly appeared.
There is also a solo section involving mealworms, but don’t worry—they will NOT make you eat them. At most, they might wave them around near your mouth for a second before taking them away. So even if you’re scared of bugs, you can still safely volunteer to go into the treatment room to retrieve the tape.
Overall, Reviver has an extremely cohesive storyline, impressive special effects, and incredibly immersive sets and atmosphere. Definitely one of my favorite experiences at Umeplay, and I highly recommend it!
