Several years ago, Heiner and I visited the original Sanatorium, which reached position 36 in TERPECA 2018. This year, we returned to experience their new game, located in the same space.
As with the original, the new Sanatorium immerses you completely—thanks not only to the acting but also to the impressive set design. For those who played the old game, it’s worth noting that the set is entirely new. This is not a remake, but a completely different experience.
While the game includes some scary elements, it’s not a classic horror game. It focuses more on the tasks and puzzles, and despite the dark atmosphere, it avoids jump scares. Most of the actor interactions serve to advance the story rather than to frighten the players.
The game features several interesting tasks and some nicely designed spaces. I especially appreciated one reference to the original Sanatorium, which only returning players will recognize.
This game could easily be a nominee—or even a finalist—in TERPECA. Unfortunately, it is available only in Spanish. Since the actors don’t speak English, it’s unclear whether it will ever be accessible to international players. However, if you can bring along a Spanish speaker, you should definitely play it.
