There are rooms you simply play. And then there are the rare ones that stay with you.
After more than 3000 escape rooms played worldwide, it becomes increasingly difficult to be truly surprised. Most concepts feel familiar, many twists predictable. And yet, The Man From Beyond had been sitting at the very top of my personal bucket list for years, not least because it is the only game that has been continuously awarded a Top Escape Rooms Project Enthusiasts’ Choice Award since 2018.
On March 31, 2026, the time had finally come. Together with an international team from Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Poland, we stepped into a room in Houston that has been talked about a lot over the years and still managed to do something I did not expect.
It genuinely moved me.
The Man From Beyond is not a traditional escape room. And it is not quite traditional theatre either. It exists precisely in the space between those two worlds and fully embraces it.
From the very first moment, it becomes clear that this experience is not primarily about puzzles. Of course there are mechanisms, tasks, and things to solve, but they never exist for their own sake. Everything is designed to pull you deeper into the story. You are not just a team trying to escape a room. You are part of an unfolding event.
What makes this experience stand out is its focus on emotion. Decisions feel meaningful, interactions carry weight, and the presence of the performers ensures that you never feel like a passive observer. This is a game that asks for your trust and rewards you for giving it.
After the game, we had the chance to spend some time with Haley and Cameron, the creative minds behind Strange Bird, over a late lunch. Both of them are incredibly warm, thoughtful, and deeply aware of what they are creating. That conversation reinforced what the experience already made clear. This is not just excellent craftsmanship. It is a deliberate artistic vision of what immersive storytelling can be.
Even before the experience fully begins, The Man From Beyond establishes its tone. We booked the VIP version, which included a welcome drink and a personal séance with Madame Daphne. What initially feels like a small extra quickly reveals itself as an integral part of the narrative. The line between arriving and playing essentially disappears.
There is no clear starting point. You are not sent into a room. You are drawn into a world.
The story surrounding the Houdini séance unfolds with quiet confidence and remarkable precision. Rather than explaining everything, it builds atmosphere through subtle details, glances, and moments in between. It is storytelling that gives space, and because of that, it becomes even more powerful.
A defining element of this experience is its performers. We had the privilege of having Haley and Cameron themselves in our run. Knowing that the creators are in front of you is one thing. Experiencing how naturally and convincingly they embody their roles is something else entirely.
Their performances do not feel acted. They feel lived. Every interaction is authentic, every reaction believable. Very quickly, you stop thinking of this as a game at all.
The atmosphere remains consistently dense throughout and carries you from beginning to end. It never needs to push or overwhelm to leave an impression. Its strength lies in its restraint, in its consistency, and in the quiet intensity it builds over time.
This is an experience that does not end when you leave the room. It lingers.
From a gameplay perspective, anyone expecting a traditional escape room structure will likely be surprised. The Man From Beyond deliberately shifts the focus.
Puzzles are deeply integrated into the narrative and never feel isolated. Gameplay emerges naturally from interactions, decisions, and the evolving situation within the space. It is less about solving and more about engaging with what is happening around you.
As a result, every run becomes unique. Team dynamics, reactions to the performers, and small choices along the way shape the experience in ways that cannot be replicated exactly.
What stood out the most is the feeling that everything you touch matters. Props are not just functional. They feel intentional, tangible, and in a certain way, almost magical.
The Man From Beyond is far less about challenge and far more about experience. And that is exactly where its greatest strength lies.
LOVE IT!!! An absolute must play. Even after more than 3000 rooms, this stands as one of the most powerful experiences I have ever had. Rightfully, it has been one of the defining flagships of the TERPECA rankings in the United States for years.
