While doing research for our Athens trip, Zoe was one of the last games we added. I’ve just heard that a few people recommend it and that’s it, so it barely made the cut. But I am so glad it did, as for us it was the best game of the trip (which contained 32 of the best Athens games created within the last ~3 years, with one notable omission – Hide N Seek)! Within our team, we often have varying opinions about games because we put emphasis on different aspects of them, but this was the only one, which we unanimously agreed is a top game, because it scores very high in all possible metrics – a complete and round package. It belongs to the group of lighter horrors, which allowed it to spread wings where heavier horrors are more limited.

The set design is very impressive. Many Athens games have enormous square footage, but that often comes with a price that each space on its own is not well decorated. Zoe strikes a golden balance here, where it is not among the biggest games, but is instead meticulously decorated, while still being quite large. Also, Athens sets are often not varied, where for example a whole game takes place in different rooms of the same house. In Zoe, we venture through varied locations, so being on this set really is a delight and does not get boring at any point.

Another aspect where Zoe shines are puzzles. As it belongs to the group of lighter horrors, it did not have to compromise on gameplay as many heavier horrors do and the gameplay still feels challenging and engaging. Moreover, puzzles not only fit very well to the theme, but some of them develop the storyline as well! Slower and tricky start sequence may cool off teams rushing for adrenaline, but seasoned players will appreciate it and feel satisfied.

Now, let’s talk about acting and story together as they are tightly connected. The story of this game is quite artistic and may evoke emotional response from players. We get to know it step by step through various events and interactions and it ends on a higher note with an emotional finale. The acting is key to the storytelling. There are some jumpscares in this game increasing the tension, but the most important part of it are cinematic scenes that are simultaneously impressive and present the narrative to players in an attractive way. One of them is among the best scenes I’ve ever seen!

I’ll also throw in a word of appreciation for well thought through and executed hint system!
